Intro to Coding

Boca Raton- Since 2006

About Intro to Coding

This camp is perfect for our youngest aspiring coders and for kids who love to play video games. We begin the camp with robotics challenges that will teach your children to program their robot to navigate a maze, collect articles and bring them back to base, and much more. We will also dive into the Lego WeDo robotics kits to have them build and program motors and sensors to react to the environment.

Finally, we will introduce them to one of the most popular video game software packages available - developed by the engineers at MIT. We will teach children to write code using a drag and drop style block code that focuses on critical thinking, giving them a foundation for more difficult programming languages as they get older and more advanced in their development as a coder.

This camp is for children ages 6 to 8.

We offer an Video Game Programming Camp for ages 9 and up.

A Few Details

What will kids take home?

Your children will create their own Scratch account that will give them access to a world of animations, games, and artistic projects created by other Scratchers.  In addition, your children will begin creating their own games, animations and stories using Scratch. They will be able to access their creations from any computer with internet access. The software is web based so there is no need to download anything, or depend on having the latest version.

Skills Taught/Practiced

  • Critical thinking
  • Problem-solving
  • Creativity
  • Teamwork and collaboration
  • Sharing of ideas and resources
  • Adapting to new challenges

Why Programming?

Programming is a highly technical endeavor but it doesn't have to be boring. Our instructors - and the Scratch community - make learning object-oriented programming easy, fun, and intuitive. Your children will practice story telling, storyboarding, problem solving and creativity. They will learn to program their own stories and games that they can choose to share on the web. (Sharing is optional.)

What is Scratch?

Scratch is a programming language and an online community where children can program and share interactive media such as stories, games, and animation with people from all over the world. As children create with Scratch, they learn to think creatively, work collaboratively, and reason systematically. Scratch is designed and maintained by the Lifelong Kindergarten group at the MIT Media Lab.

The Scratch Community

When participating in the Scratch online community, members can explore and experiment in an open learning community with other Scratch members from all backgrounds, ages, and interests. Members can share their work, get feedback, and learn from each other.

Guidelines for the Scratch Community

The MIT Scratch Team works with the community to maintain a friendly and respectful environment for people of all ages, races, ethnicities, religions, sexual orientations, and gender identities. Members are asked to comment constructively and to help keep the website friendly by reporting any content that does not follow the community guidelines.

There are no prerequisites to take this camp. We only ask that children who enroll in this camp be ready for fun and creativity, patience and perseverance are also virtues.

What's Next?

After taking our Video Game Programming Level 1 course it seems natural to enroll in the Level 2 course. We highly recommend this, as it will lead your children down the road to learning more complex coding languages such as HTML, Python, Javascript and eventually Java. As coders become proficient in Scratch we encourage our Minecraft Modding course, the Web Building course, Creative Computing, and eventually the series of Raspberry Pi courses offered through our sister company Young Makers Lab.
